In his book on negotiation, Christopher Voss teaches the reader how to communicate clearly and constructively about any contentious subject or situation. He emphasises the need to understand one's counterpart and to communicate our empathy through labeling and summarisation. Furthermore, he discusses the key importance of hidden information to the success of a negotiation and how to uncover it.

Moreover, the skills and techniques presented serve not just to improve one's ability to communicate when the stakes are high, but present a model which can be used to make daily conversation more enjoyable and meaningful, through providing the tools to serve as a better confidant to those we care about.

I've found Voss' advice to be particularly helpful in how it changed my approach to situations where I was frustrated with someone else. By following a negotiation approach which focused on empathising with the other party and forced me to avoid direct expression of my own frustration, it allowed me to learn contextual information which clarified the conversation and relieved my frustration.

Analysts are generally skeptical, including of answering questions. They are reasoned with through the use of clearly presented data.

Analysts often benefit from practising smiling more when talking to others and being cautious of cutting themselves off from their counterpart, who is their best source of information.

Assertives primarily desire to be validated that others have heard them. They may be incapable of listening before this need is met.

Agreeables desire to develop a strong interpersonal connection and to be liked by their counterpart. This can lead to them being unwilling to object to their counterpart or to push to close the deal, leading negotiation to stall, particularly between a pair of agreeables.

Aim to uncover unknown unknowns. These are generally the most valuable pieces of information in a negotiation as they can completely change the situation.

On the other hand, Black Swans are information which may seem completely innocuous and unimportant to your counterpart.

Ch 2: Be a Mirror

Avoid going into a negotiation with preconceptions about the other party. While it is good to keep a variety of hypotheses in mind, one should be aiming foremost to observe and understand the other party.

Negotiation is not about arguments. Focusing on the arguments (truth claims) will distract you as you end up arguing with the voice inside your head.

Employ mirroring, where you repeat 1 to 3 words from the other party's statement back to them (potentially as part of a question). This reinforces in them a sense that they are being empathised with, encouraging them to empathise with you in turn.

Pause for atleast 4 seconds after mirroring, giving the other person time to respond. Repeat the process as they gradually give you more clarifying information.

It is important to slow down during a negotiation, trying to rush discussion makes your counterpart uncomfortable and defensive.

Ch 4: Beware 'Yes', Master 'No'

Answering in the negative to a question allows people to feel in control of the situation as they can assert their boundaries, their insecurities and when they don't understand something. It makes them feel safe.

Allowing people the chance to object provides the chance to seek elaboration from them, informing the negotiation and aligning it with the key motives of both parties.

We are often afraid of hearing 'no' from our counterpart as we associate it with rejection and dead ends. However, it is often the start of the proper negotiation as it helps reveal the underlying issues.

Forcing a 'no' by mislabeling one of the person's emotions or desires or by asking a ridiculous question can force an otherwise unresponsive counterpart to engage with you.

Ch 5: Triggering the Two Words Which Immediately Transform Any Negotiation

This aims to communicate a high degree of empathy. By using your own words to summarise what you have been told and using labels, you demonstrate that you understand the other person's perspective and are not merely parotining their words back to them.

Additionally, a non-judgemental effort to empathise creates unconditional positive regard, which can make someone feel more comfortable and open. This ultimately facilitates behavioural change.

Ch 6: Bend Their Reality

Be aware of the underlying desires of both parties, these are unlikely to be expressed out in the open. Awareness of these desires will allow you to position yourself to appeal to what the other person needs.

Money and numbers

People react to the pressure imposed by deadlines by making impulsive concessions. Reveal your deadlines to your counterpart in order to motivate them to concede, however, keep in mind that a missed deadline is rarely the end of the story. Better no deal than a bad deal.

Make sure that your counterpart understands what they stand to lose by failing to agree to a deal. Generally, we a motivated far more by the potential of a loss than the potential for profit.

'Fair' is often used in order to try to push the other side onto the back foot and induce guilt. Respond by inviting your counterpart to explain how you have treated them unfairly.

Expressing a desire to treat your counterpart fairly early in the negotiation can help to generate a positive dynamic.

Don't allow yourself to develop a nasty reputation as a negotiator, as your reputation precedes you.

Ch 7: Create the illusion of control

These questions allow you to express concerns without confronting the other person.

Calibrated questions also allow you to say no without direct rejection, by raising the problem of how a proposal would be implemented, "how can I do that ?"

Avoid reacting angrily, learn to instead pause and ask a calibrated question.

Ch 8: Guarantee execution

Pay attention the body language and inflection someone uses. Are their word and actions congruent?

You don't just need the agreement of the other people at the table but of other stakeholders who are able to make or break a deal.

People often use person pronouns in a manner which is in incongruent with their influence over a negotiation. When they have little or no real ability to influence the decision, they will be much more willing to refer to themselves and what they think. In contrast, those with the most decision making power will often focus on the group as a whole, referring to 'we' and 'them' and emphasising the need to confirm with other members of the group.

After an initial confirmation, "yes", look for conviction. Ask follow up questions, eg. "How does this impact others you work with?", "What difficulties do you foresee arising?", "What about this is the most difficult for you?".

Use your name to make yourself more empathetic to the other person.

Ch 9: Bargaining hard

Express anger minimally, "strategic umbrage", in order to avoid your counterpart closing off. Only express genuine anger this way.

Ch 10: Find the Black Swan

Most questions in negotiation are focused on uncovering known unknowns, however, these often confer a limited benefit and our counterpart may resist revealing them to us, because they are obviously advantageous to us.
